Synopsis:
The movie follows Aaron as he replies to a Craigslist ad posted by Josef (Mark Duplass), seeking to hire a videographer for a day. It is filmed entirely as found footage and it honestly works perfectly. Josef tells Aaron that he has cancer, with only a few months to live, and wants Aaron to film what is essentially a video message to his unborn son, Buddy.
Things start to go down the path of unsetting behaviour, starting off with him in a bathtub playing out ‘tubby time’ acting out that he’s bathing his son, then pretending to drown as a practical joke (and this is just within the first 10 minutes). Let’s not also forget our friendly neighbourhood wolf mask, Peachfuzz in the mix too.
Review
Mark Duplass does such an amazing job, he manages to keep you on the edge of your seat, slowly revealing more of the crazy, unstable nature which is Josef. One thing I noted in his performance that he has 2 distinct facial expressions which he functions with - blank hollow stare or unsettling smile. This also goes into his tone of voice. Where he talks about an uncomfortable (putting it mildly) story involving his wife, Angela, you cant see his face but his tone changes drastically from his almost sickly bubbly demeanour to cold, empty and monotone.
I have to give similar praise to director Patrick Brice who plays videogropher, Aaron. His portrayal of the way someone would react in his situation honestly i find is really believable which i don't see a lot in horror movies.
With little easter eggs throughout the movie of whats to come, and an eerie atmosphere created by both actors, it is definitely worth the watch and i wouldnt miss it.
Make sure to also check out Creep 2, the sequel which premiered in 2017 involving both Brice and Duplass again. I will also be doing a review on this so keep an eye out on the site or my instagram!
I am waiting on the edge of my seat waiting for Creep 3 now!
